The most common call we get isn't a dead system — it's a heat pump that's technically running but not actually keeping the house warm, usually because it's quietly defaulted to backup electric heat and nobody noticed until the bill arrived.
A coil that stays iced over well after the defrost cycle should've cleared it, a fault code blinking on the outdoor unit, or a system that short-cycles on and off every few minutes are the three symptoms that bring us out most in the shoulder seasons.
Because heat pumps have more moving parts (reversing valve, defrost board, variable-speed compressor on newer units) than a standard AC, we diagnose by pulling actual refrigerant pressures and electrical readings rather than swapping parts until something works.
